I did two wonderful hikes in Wanaka. The first was to the Rob Roy Glacier. Not only was the glacier itself really neat to see, but there was plenty of great views along the way in the valley below.
While standing and admiring the view, we could hear occasional little cracking noises, but didn’t see anything happening, then just before turning around and hiking out, we heard a huge crack. I didn’t have my camera out, so the initial icefall is missing from the video, but this is what came afterwards. The two spots where ice and snow is tumbling down were otherwise little waterfalls, about like what you see to the right and left.
And the next hike was up Roy’s Peak, just a couple kilometers out of Wanaka. Yet another wonderful hike, with a beautiful view from the top.
After my wonderful ride into Wanaka and then spending a couple days around here, I can’t recommend this area enough.
