Heading north out of Te Anua, I had a beautiful ride that dead ended at Milford Sound, yet another stunning area in New Zealand.
It was worth stopping around every corner to get a photo.
While there, I went on a boat trip through the Sound for a couple hours.
Saw some New Zealand Fur Seals
A few facts about Milford Sound:
technically, it’s a fjord, not a sound (along with all the others in the SW of the South Island)
in a typical year, they get 7-9 meters of rainfall, and the most ever seen was 10.5m (that’s over 34ft, or 1 1/8” ever day of the year)
it’s very common to have high winds blowing in from the open ocean, and windspeed accelerates greatly through the narrow portions, with the highest being recorded at 270kph
the highest peak in the area is 2700m, and just out past the sound, the ocean reaches 600m…pretty drastic difference over only about 10km.
Yep, not too shabby is it there? 🙂
Fascinating 🙂
