I’m in Auckland, waiting around for a week or so until my bike shows up.
One of the main spots to go visit here is the Auckland Museum. The highlights of this place were the exhibits on Maori culture and the War Memorial.
This is a Kahukiwi, a cloak made from Kiwi feathers, which was very popular in the 19th century. I’m guessing Jay Z has a wardrobe full of them somewhere.
They had a lot of jewelry that featured teeth…
Porpoise teeth…
…fox…
…whale…
…dog…
…and human
Some weapons made with shark’s teeth
And some vicious looking spears
The War Memorial section of the museum wasn’t nearly as extensive as the War Memorial Museum I recently went through in Canberra…There was a wealth of information (one interesting fact…During WWI, 1 in 5 males in NZ at the time fought in the war) but not so many physical displays, and therefore, not so many pictures. But here are a few…
A Spitfire
And a Zero
And an awesome cutaway and moving Rolls Royce V12 from the Spitfire.
Amongst many mounts of the various animals your find around New Zealand, they had the moa (sorry for the photo quality…I couldn’t avoid the glare off the display case)
Though it’s extinct now, the Moa is the largest known bird…standing about 10ft tall (don’t use the woman in the photo to judge the scale…she was exceptionally short).
That’s all…back to waiting for my bike to show up!
