On the morning of the 26th, I took the Chunnel from England to France. For those wondering, you don’t drive through it. This may sound silly to those who know, but honestly, I didn’t know how the thing worked until fairly recently. Its a bit like a ferry…you drive your vehicle onto a train, and the train hauls you and your vehicle underground/water, then drops you off on the other side. The funny thing about it is that the entry and exit points are not within view of the sea, so it takes a bit of time to grasp that you’ve crossed anything significant once you get off on the other side. Kinda similar (for me, anyway) to how when taking a long flight, I struggle a little to convince myself that I just landed in a completely new place.

While I was in Canada, I had made a post on a forum that mentioned something about flying my bike to the UK. Shortly thereafter, I got an email from a fellow motorcyclist in the UK saying that if I was planning to be in SW England, I would have a place to stay.

In the US, roundabouts lie somewhere between uncommon and unheard of. But despite rarely coming across them back home, I don’t really understand the confusion that they can bring about…it seems to be a pretty simple idea. But I must admit that one in particular threw me off…I’ll call it the double roundabout. I think the goal here is to enter, complete two figure eights, and exit without crashing…upon completion, the mayor presents you with the key to the city.

Riding in the wind isn’t necessarily that bad…what makes it tough is if the wind is gusting, or if it’s blowing from the sides, much like on my ride from Glasgow to the Isle of Skye today. But on a positive note, at least it rained 90% of the time.

I stopped in Chicago for a couple days to visit my cousin’s family. Despite having not spent much time in Chicago, I was mostly just interested in hanging out with them and wasn’t too concerned with checking out the city. But I did manage to go for a chilly swim in Lake Michigan and eat some fantastic pizza (deep dish > thin crust, end of story).

I’ve spent the last week around Minnesota and Iowa, visiting friends and family, and in between seeing people, I’ve been staring at a pile of maps into the wee hours of the mornings.

I got packed up and headed out for Ten Sleep, Wyoming, knowing that a lot of the riding during the first part of the trip is not only going to be highways, but highways I’ve ridden numerous times before, so I’m fully expecting some kinda boring sections. That being said, the ride from Buffalo to Ten Sleep was fantastic…a nice winding road with some beautiful views. Continue reading
07/04/2013 – 0 days/0 miles – Heading out tomorrow
Well, the 4th is my last night in Colorado. Gonna have breakfast with some friends tomorrow, then head up to Ten Sleep, WY for a couple days of climbing before I make my way to Minnesota. It feels kind of surreal to be leaving Colorado, knowing that it’ll be nearly a year before I’m back, but overall, I’m really excited to finally get this trip started
